William Preston Downey, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2026, at StoryPoint, West Milton, at the blessed age of 86. Born on January 31, 1940, in Dayton, Ohio, he was the beloved son of the late George Preston Downey and Irene Elizabeth Downey (Nelson). Bill was the beloved husband of Joan Elaine Downey (Sargent), whom he married on the memorable day of August 20, 1961. He was a dedicated husband who found his fulfillment by caring for and cherishing his wife.
Bill completed his education at Roosevelt High School in 1958 and went on to achieve a master's of management science from the University of Dayton. Furthering his commitment to lifelong learning, he earned a master's and doctorate degree in divinity, embodying the value of faith he would carry and share throughout his lifetime. He graduated from the GMI and later retired from General Motors (Inland) after a fulfilling career as an electrical engineer, where he greatly contributed to his field with diligence and passion.
A man of many interests, Bill was an Eagle Scout, an avid tennis player, and held a deep love for the outdoors, embodying the spirit of a city cowboy. His commitment to his faith was evident through his active involvement in church, most recently at First Light Baptist Church in Vandalia, where he served as a Sunday school teacher. He extended his ministry as a missionary to Africa with Finish Line Ministries International. Bill also exemplified sacrifice, ensuring his sons received a values-based education at Dayton Christian School.
Bill is fondly remembered by his family including his sons and daughters-in-law: Craig William & Danielle Downey of Union City, Indiana, and Brett William & Terri Downey of Cibolo, Texas. He was a pillar of strength and an example of fatherhood to his 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Charles Sargent of New Mexico, sister-in-law Linda Downey of Bowling Green, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his brother Terry Lee Downey, sister-in-law Eloida Sargent, and his parents and in-laws.
Those who knew Bill will forever recall his loving nature, faith-filled heart, and selfless ways. His love for horses, dogs, and cats reflected his compassionate soul, one that found joy in all of God's creation. One of his most impressive feats was completing the Chicago Marathon, an endeavor that showcased his determination and zest for life.
A celebration of life will be held by the family at 11:30 am Saturday, February 28, at First Light Baptist Church, 140 Elva Ct. The family will receive family and friends from 10:30-11:30 am at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Finish Line Ministries at www.finishlineministries.org .
